Central Coast Double, May 1998
by Jennie Phillips

Central Coast Double was great this past weekend. Full report may come later but in a nutshell:

Course was completely rerouted because PCH is still closed. For those having with a detailed map, here’s a summary (I’ve got the route sheet, Don, if you want a copy for your BikeMaster) :

24th Street in Paso Robles to Nacimiento Rd
Nacimiento Rd to Adelaide
Adelaide to Klau Mine
Klau Mine to Chimney Rock
Chimney Rock to Nacimiento Rd
Nacimiento to Interlake Rd
Interlake Rd to Jolon Rd
Jolon Rd to Mission Rd
Mission Rd to Nacimiento-Fergusson (NF)
NF all the way out (and down) to the coast
Back up NF (2500ft in ~7miles) back to Fort Hunter Liggett
Some closed road thru FHL to Jolon Rd
Jolon Rd to San Lucas-Oasis Rd
San Lucas-Oasis to some ‘mother of a long climb that we decided was the worst of the day’
That road connected with Interlake Rd
Interlake Rd back to Nacimiento Rd
East on Nacimiento Rd, heading to our rest stop in Bradley!
South on Bradley Rd to Hare Canyon Rd
East on Hare Canyon to Indian Valley Rd
Indian Valley to River Rd
Then we had to go east and detour around most of River Rd….it was flooded from the rains during the week.
Total official mileage: 216miles (+ 2m to/from the motel = 220 miles) - 7 miles longer than the planned course
Elevation gain: 15,500ft - 2000 more feet that the planned course
Elapsed official time: 14 hrs
Ride time: 13 hrs

Weather was perfect! Clear skies, no rain, no wet roads, cool temps. The winds, however, were a real bear, coming out of the northwest.
