Holy City/Redwood Estates Ride, May 19, 1999
by Richard Jacobs (RLJMerlin@aol.com)

On Wednesday 19 May 1999, three brave souls showed up for the formidable "Between Weekends Ride" led by the modest and unassuming "Richard Jacobs". The other two riders were Lee Gagnon, a recent new member who has quietly bagged us all on various Billy Goat and Mountain Goat rides, and the much in demand Paul Greene, who we encourage to go on our rides. It seems that whenever we are in the Santa Cruz Mountains, we slyly divert our route so that our bicycle tires roll by His mountain chalet, hoping to get an invite to partake of the pastries, cakes, and pies prepared by His gracious wife, "Carol".

Not to be outdone by the Paul Metz group last Saturday, Carol baked up a few pies for the three of us, which we consumed with enthusiasm. It so happens that last Saturday the Paul Metz ride barged in on Carol and Paul Greene and ravenously consumed all of Carol’s cookies. And, horror upon horrors, even the Axtell group cancelled their ride and joined the Metz’s raiding party, when they got wind that the Greene’s Chalet was there for the taking.

Holy City/Redwood Estates is a worthy addition to the Goat list. It’s about 2 miles from Old Santa Cruz Highway in Holy City to Summit Road. It meanders through the Redwood Estates development, which is composed of mountain homes, Vol. Fire Dept., Community Center, Post Office, and an M & P store. The road changes names a few times but if you stay on the wide parts at the Y’s you eventually zig zag to Summit Road. Some parts are very steep, which require standing, but all are short so that resettling into the saddle is possible.
