Ride to New Idria, May 10, 1998
by Bob Thompson (thompsbk@jps.net)

This ride was postponed twice, due to the large slide on Highway 25 plus other slides on Panoche Rd. The roads are finally now open.

The slide area on Highway 25 is in fine shape. I do not know what the road is like below Paicines. You will see changes in the river banks.

Bob Becker, Deb James, Ric Simmonson, Bill Bartlow, Jim Williams and Ann Rosinwig joined Kris in riding to Panoche.

The road to Panoche suffered a lot of damage. Many bridges are closed. The big new bridge that was built two years ago is gone completely. There are dirt or gravel detours around them that we were able to ride. Eleven miles out at the start of the climb there is a ridable two mile dirt detour that goes up the other side of the canyon. It offers good views of the huge slide. There were lots of potholes along the entire route.

Between Panoche and New Idria the road was in about the same condition as it was last year. It was 1:15 when Dave Basista and I reached the 52 mile mark at the base of the wall. That was the time that I had set for returning so we did not ride into the camp.
