Return to Ride Stories

One Tough Cookie (and not a piece of cake)!
by Grete Johnson GHJ1998@aol.com

Last Monday, June 7th was the date of my very first (possibly annual) Nieman Marcus Cookie Ride - Weekday edition, and what a ride it turned out to be! I had 7 unsuspecting riders show up, and although I had listed this as a hilly ride, with a possible billy goat thrown in, they had no idea what was in store for them! I said they would earn their cookies, and that they did!

I designed the route by map the night before (does that make this a "designer route"?) and drove it in the moments prior to arriving at the start location. That is when I realized that we were going to be in for a bit of a challenge.... Back at the start point, I watched my victims, oops, I mean riders arrive, one by one. As I pondered the group, I was relatively sure that all could handle whatever I threw at them, and they certainly did, although there was some good natured grumbling at times! Luckily I had given them all cookies to take along on the ride, gave them pre ride brownies, and promised them more, if they survived the ride.

The ride went well, and although we lost almost half the group at one point, we were happily reunited about an hour later, for coffee in Los Gatos. (They stuck close by after that!) I didn't hear any new grumbling when we got back to the cars and they were rewarded with more goodies, in fact, they all seemed to have really enjoyed the ride.

Sunday, June 11th, the date of my first annual (maybe) Nieman Marcus Cookie Ride- Weekend edition, so, for a good time, a challenge, and some YUMMY cookies, come out and join us at Congress Springs Park on Glen Brae in Saratoga.

The success of a ride can be judged be several things, but the enthusiasm of the participants has a great deal to do with it. Thanks go out to: Paul Greene, Richard Jacobs, George Ford, Faith Walton, Henning Jensen, Don Hines, and Bob Sottardi.
