Pinnacles Campout, 8-9 March 2003
by Don Axtell

As an add-on to Bob Thompson's New Idria Ride, I decided to have a one-night campout at the Pinnacles. So after the ride, we drove down to the Pinnacles and camped. Sunday was then a hiking day, and we drove home afterward.

This weekend was just about the perfect weekend. Weather-wise, people-wise, and the riding and hiking were pretty good also. The only thing that would have made it better is if Christine didn't get her weekends mixed up. She finally figured out that she had to work. So instead we had Jim Pannunzio join us to fill her place. We also had Kim and Ken, Dougy, Debbie Wade, and Debbie's friend Gene. Gene is from the Santa Cruz club and works at the cement plant in Davenport. For the Sunday hike we were joined by Peggy and George.

The bottoms of my feet are very tender and my thighs are all sore muscles, both from the walking about 10 miles yesterday. I'm sure that everyone else will have these complaints also for these next few days.

This was my first time since high school that I have gone on these trails. And for many of the people it was their first time ever. We were all really impressed by the rock formations and the size of the boulders, and the caves were pretty neat. We all took lots and lots of pictures.

I plan to lead another campout here for 2 nights on the Labor Day weekend in September. Ride bikes to and from with a day in between for hiking.
