Pam's Pancake Ride, Plus
June 28 2003, by Don Axtell

I had a good ride on Saturday. It was Pam's Pancake ride, but Pam ended up going to Oregon with Mike. We had 30 people, 13 of whom actually stayed for the pancakes. The women were Debbie Wade (my coleader), Karen McGeough, Sharon Tyrfingsson, Lynn Repetsky, Robin Ross, Mary Ann Palmer, Shannon Rodriguez, Traci Stahl. Art was there too, as well as Ray, Guy, Dennis, Ben, Ford, Doug and many others.

At my table for breakfast was me, Debbie, Karen, and Doug Gillison. Alot of the people did a coffee stop instead of the pancakes, so I gave the pancake people +10 miles for doing the ride as listed. Everyone did Old Santa Cruz Hwy and Soquel-San Jose to get to breakfast and back.

The optional billygoats were Loma Prieta, Soda Springs, and Montevina. Some of the people did Loma Prieta before breakfast, while some did it after. I rode up Loma Prieta after breakfast with Debbie and Karen, but after that I was on my own. When I was riding out to do Soda Springs I could see the ones that were coming back down, They had all done Loma Prieta before breakfast so they were now one goat ahead of me.

Then when I climbed up Montevina I could see the ones that did that goat too. The only people to do all of the goats were me, Dennis Uyeno, Guy Neenan, Art Cruz, Fred Klinger, and Corky Watts.

It was a nice hot day, so I made sure that I was soaked all of the time since the start of Loma Prieta. I found some nice cold water in a creek very near where Soquel-San Jose Road joins Summit Road. I carried an extra water bottle just for pouring over me. Before climbing up Soda Springs I jumped in the creek at the back of Lexington Reservoir, and before climbing up Montevina I went swimming in the reservoir.

I felt fine all day. I never got too hot, and I was actually enjoying the heat because it was a good excuse for me to play in the water. I rode from home, so my totals for the day were 100 miles with 10000 ft of climbing. Average speed 12.5 mph. I left home at 6:30 AM and got back at 7:15 PM. MB- pace with 65% ride factor.
