Tierra Bella Stories, April 4th 1998

This year's Tierra Bella is now history. If you have a story to tell about this ride, then send it in and I'll add it to the list. I've included my story to start things off.

Super SAG #1, story by Don Axtell

My job title for the past few years has been Super SAG #1. I like that title. You're not only "#1", but you are "Super" besides. In reality, the Super means that I cover more than one route, with my job description being that I bring riders back to Gavilon College while the other SAGs just help out on the road. But I also try my best to help out on the road, too.

This year was no different. I was driving along and saw a few cyclists stopped, fixing a flat tire. I stopped to help out. It was a group of three women, and it looked like they had everything pretty much under control, so I just brought out my floor pump to assist. They put the new tube in and then I helped pump up the tire.

There turned out to be a big slit in the tire, so it needed a boot. Instead of putting in a boot (which I didn't have) I offered to give them a spare tire that I had found laying around in my garage. I then quickly took the old tire off and replaced it with the one from my van. The three women all stood around, suitably impressed at how quick and easy I made it look. Then they wanted to pay for the tire, but I would have none of that. Then we were all off and down the road.

But that wasn't the end of the story. At the lunch stop, I was hanging out with Judy Barnes, when some women came up and Judy knew them from work. Seems that one of them was even her boss. Judy then introduced me to them, and then they said, "Oh, he was the nice man who fixed our flat tire, and even gave us a new one." So it turned out that I had, by pure chance, did a very good deed for Judy's boss. So now Judy is all set for getting away with anything at work if it has to do with bicycling.
