Lupine Loop / Arroyo Seco Campout
April 18 to 19, 2015 (Saturday to Sunday)

This is called the Lupine Loop Campout because in April there are fields and fields of purple and blue lupine all along the course, especially on the return trip. If this campout were held at any other time, then it would be better called the Arroyo Seco Campout, as we stay in Arroyo Seco campground along the Arroyo Seco River.

This campout is well supported, as a SAG vehicle comes along and pulls the club's cooking trailer. People bring their own tent and sleeping bag, and then the SAG carries everybody's gear to the campground. People will split up the chores of cooking and cleaning for each of the meals.

After meeting in Salinas (see directions), the route goes south on River Rd then detours over to Gonzales for a lunch stop. After lunch, the next stop is Soledad Mission. Then the route joins Arroyo Seco Rd and finally heads for the hills. There is one more stop at Miller's Ranch store, just a few miles before arriving in Arroyo Seco Campground.

Arroyo Seco is a very nice river. The water will still be a bit cold in April, but for those who are willing, there are some good swimming holes.

Arroyo Seco Rd ends at the campground, but you can continue upriver on Indian Rd, which is really just a dirt trail. This is good for either hiking or mountain biking. If you keep going, it will take you up and over the hill, finally coming out at Mission San Antonio.

The return route goes up over Carmel Valley Rd, with an option to do the Cachagua Loop. Lunch is in Carmel Valley. Then it is up over Laureles Grade and along busy Hwy 68 back to Salinas.
