Letter # 66 - February 2, 1979Home,I guess that it has almost been one month since we last wrote. We received two letters from you when we arrived back in Freetown this time. I hope that you received the letter with the film negatives. That was the last letter, I think. We picked up the two packages that you sent. It seems that they arrived over a month ago, and that Peace Corps forgot to tell me until yesterday. We paid 6.94 leones duty for the two of them. The candy canes are melted but the clothes are okay. Thank you. Our schedule now makes it a bit awkward to receive and mail letters. At the first of every month I have a meeting in Freetown. We both come down for that and stay about a week. After that we go back up to Kamiendor for the remaining three weeks. That means that a letter from you might have to wait at the Peace Corps office for up to 3 weeks before we get a chance to reply to it. Then, for us mailing a letter, it is impossible to do from Kamiendor. The only way is if we mail one on a trip down to Koidu. Cement was supposed to come up to Kamiendor over a month ago but it didn't come. This Monday though, we will be traveling up with a load of cement. Therefore we can start getting this water supply completed. We are beginning construction on the well now. It is 14 ft in diameter and is going to be 20 feet deep. We are to make a concrete wall around it and then sink it as we go. After the well, only the pipeline will remain. We are managing to spend less than I make each month. Of the 200 leones that I make, we are capable of saving about 50 leones. So far, this extra has been used to pay off wedding debts. Next, we will try to save up to help on the plane fare home.
Love, |
