Railroad Tie Replacement

On Union Pacific tracks, along Monterey Hwy in south San Jose, March 11, 2013.
In talking with one of the workmen, they average about 6 miles per day.
They also travel all around the United States. Next up is some track in Kansas.

This looks all like a lot of work, right? I can imagine it taking a full day for one tie, if I had to do this with a pick and shovel. But now almost everything is done with the help of fancy machines. It almost looks like fun now.
