Letter # 61 - October 27, 1978

Home,

It hasn't been long since I last wrote you (in fact, I think that Diana still has the letter in her purse because she forgot to mail it) but things have been happening, so I thought I would write you again.

First, today we received the first new letter from home, the one you sent Oct 1. It is good to hear that Patty had her baby and that everyone is doing fine. I'm glad that we didn't try to wait around until it came! Who won the baby's arrival date guessing contest?

Next, my big check finally came today, so I took it over and paid for Diana's plane ticket with 100 leones to spare. The dollar dropped during all of this time, so I lost about 36 dollars on the exchange rate.

Third, training is now all but over. Keith was scheduled to take my place out in Kamiendor. I took him out there to see the place, but we lost him. He says that he is never going on that road again. He claims that 1/3 of the road is OK for a motorcycle, 1/3 of the road is bad but passable, and the last 1/3 of the road is probably unpassable for him. We left Kamiendor with him saying that he was still willing to take another village. Keith was never into this training program too whole-heartedly though, and so at the meeting today with our Peace Corps boss, he decided to call it quits and go back to America.

That leads up to the fourth thing. I've put myself back on the Kamiendor project. I'm thrilled to death over this decision, because I am more of a "bush" person anyway, and the idea of me trying to "make it" in Freetown was giving me the heeby-jeebies. Diana, on the other hand, is not at all pleased with this decision. She is scared to death of the road also, and doesn't want to leave Freetown.

Also, if you haven't received our last letter yet, Diana and I plan to get married pretty soon. No date has been set yet. We plan to have just a small wedding, maybe done by the justice of the peace or something. The trouble is that there are alot of people that say they want to attend. We might have to have a delayed wedding reception for all of you folks back home once we come back.

I talked to the director of the Peace Corps today, and he told me that there wasn't anything wrong with our getting married as far as the Peace Corps was concerned. That means that all we have left to do is to arrange for the wedding ceremony and get a marriage license.

Yesterday afternoon we went over and talked details with Diana's family. It was decided to have a justice of the peace perform the ceremony. Present would be me and Diana, two people from my side and two people from Diana's side. The date is to be November 30, 1978. Diana says that I have to wear a suit and she has to wear a fine dress. I guess we also need to get some wedding rings.

Diana was amazed yesterday at the price that people pay to have a baby at this one doctor (60 leones). I told her that wasn't high at all because they pay about $1000 in America. How much did Patty and Stevie pay?

Love,
Donny and Diana

PS - No, Diana is not pregnant.
