Thursday, March 30, 1978, 10:00 am, Day 793

The water level in the well is still going up. The day before yesterday, it had come up to 68 inches below ground, and yesterday it was at 65 inches. I think that it still has another 2 or 3 inches to stablize.

Block making is going a little better but still not as good as I hoped. The second day of block making, we met the same problem of the blocks falling apart as they were removed from the mold. This time I stepped in. I had them try adding more water, and it worked. Since then, hardly any of the blocks had to be thrown back because they were cracked. That day we made 57 blocks and yesterday we made 50. I had hoped that we could average about 100 blocks per day. The problem now is with communal labor. We are supposed to be getting 10 women to haul water and 10 men to make blocks each day. We've only been getting 3 or 4 of each.

Yesterday in the early afternoon, I ended up having about 5 or 6 of my ladies over to my house at the same time. That was about 4 or 5 more than I needed. This one lady was agreeable, and so had come over for an afternoon appointment. All of the others had got wind of it though, and so had come over also. I think they might all be jealous or something. They don't actually agree to do it themselves, but then they still try to keep me from finding it elsewhere.

I was quite like the international playboy. There I was, surrounded by all of these beautiful women. Every so often, I would go squeeze a breast or two, and they couldn't do anything about it except leave (which was the idea), which they didn't want to do. Finally, everyone left. The one woman snuck back in and kept her appointment. I don't really want this woman, but none of the others are agreeable, so I have to make do. She is new in town, and last week was the first time that I met her. I think that she wants it more than I do.

Fatu, last time, told me that she was going to leave Freetown this last Monday to come up and visit me. That would have put her here in Kamiendor on Tuesday. Well, she never showed up. I figured that she wasn't going to show up when I first heard her say that she was coming. I figure that she said that just to keep me from going to Diana. Fatu doesn't want to lose me, so she told me that she was coming to my village. Fatu's fears are not unfounded though, because if I can get Diana to be my woman, then I will leave Fatu behind. As they say here, "she is not serious". Fatu is not ready to settle down and keep her commitments.

Tuesday, April 4, 1978, 10:00 pm, Day 798

This is from Freetown. I came down this last Friday, and each of these last 4 nights I have spent out on the town. Today, I was really feeling the effects of it.

On Friday evening, I went with a bunch of Peace Corps to the Isabella Club. This was a sort of going-away celebration for Greg Smith. Greg came into this country in my same group, so I felt a sort of responsibility to go out and have a good time with him. There were 17 males and 3 females there that evening. Everyone was up dancing. We all had a good time. Greg got his name spoken over the sound system, as well as a few words about him, so it was really nice. We finally got to bed at about 4:30 AM. Greg left for America on Saturday morning.

Saturday afternoon, there was a Peace Corps party out at the beach. This was in honor of Howard Grey, the Peace Corps director, who has just completed his time here and will be going home this next Thursday. There were about 70 or 80 volunteers there. I got in alot of good volleyball. I had more energy than I could use, and my body seemed to be just flowing with adrenilin. I played great, making very few mistakes, but literally running and diving all over the court, making great plays and saves all the time.

Late Saturday evening, I went out to the Cape Club. There was another Peace Corps get-together to further celebrate with Howard Grey. This time we had 33 people, 8 female and the rest male. We were there from 11:00 to 3:30, and I got my fill of dancing again. This time the dancing was only in male-female combinations, but with 8 females, there was almost enough to go around. Again, I had all of this abundance of energy and really got it together in my dancing. I recieved a few comments on it the next day. One person said that I was a regular Fred Astaire. Howard Grey complimented me on my dancing, saying that I really kept with the beat and that he wished that he could dance like I could.

That evening at the Cape Club, I had mentioned to alot of the girls that they should ask Howard to dance. Howard does dance, but he usually prefers not to. With my prompting, about 5 of the girls asked him to dance, but he turned them all down. Finally then, one woman that came with Sedu Turay, the Northern Providence Peace Corps staff, asked Howard to dance, and he finally accepted. It was good to see, as I felt that Howard should try to enjoy himself more.

Sunday, I went out to the beach again, and then that evening I went out to the movies. After the movie, I went over to Omar Khayams. I found Fatu there, but she had to split her time with me. She had someone else there whom she said owed her money. After awhile she left, saying that she was taking him to CID (Central Intelligence Department), which was the police station just up the road. This was supposedly to get the money from him. Fatu still claims that she went to CID, but I think that there might be a good possibility that she went home with him instead.

I still got in some good dancing though. There were two other Peace Corps there with me, and being that I was familiar with the place, I was trying to set them up with girls of their own. Fatu helped in the girl selection. She picked one girl that I hadn't met before (and I still can't remember her name). I figured that she would be worth a try. The one guy hadn't had a woman in the 6 months that he had been in this country, and he was anxious. He took her for his own and was really enjoying the evening. I also danced a few times with her and I was pleased at what I found. Doing these slow dances you get the close contact, and her body was really greatly porportioned. She was slim in the waist and the hips but when it came to her breasts, they were really full and large. You didn't really notice though, until you got close contact with her.

The other volunteer is in Freetown for medical reasons. He says that he is having problems with the nerves in his legs. He says that they often throb and he thinks that it might be due to the arelin that we take to prevent maleria. Anyway, he said that he should keep off his feet as much as he could, which meant that he wouldn't dance.

After a while, one woman showed up, whom I had last seen a long time ago. She said her name was Kariatu, and so I sat her down between me and this volunteer. It worked out good. She liked to talk and was content to do so, so the two of them had a good conversation. Fatu never showed up again, so finally we left and I got to bed at about 2:30.

On Monday I managed to get a little work done. That afternoon I ended up at the City Hotel balcony with alot of other Peace Corps volunteers. Skep was there also. Skep Nordmark came into this country with me and Greg Smith. Skep is going home to America this Thursday and wanted to go out drinking this evening, so we were all going along. We decided to all meet at the City Hotel at 10:00 PM and then decide where to go. There were about 15 males, one female volunteer, and then Diana was there also. That made the odds 15 to 2, which weren't satisfactory to me. I wanted us all to go to Omar Khayams because there would be some women there, but some of the others wouldn't go there because of the bad reputation of the place. That is all of the fights and palavers there.

They decided to go downstairs to the City Night Club. I decided to go over to Omar Khayams to find Fatu and also to round up as many other females as I could. I found Fatu, but she didn't agree to go just then. I did manage to round up one female though, the one that I met the night before with the terrific body and the name that I can't remember. I brought her back and found the others at the City Night Club. Skep was sitting alone on one side of one of the tables, so I sat this woman down next to him and then myself on the other side of her. I hadn't thought of it before, but then the thought occurred to me that she might be good for Skep to have. I kept that option open, making sure that I didn't try to take possession of her, and that none of the other males would do so either.

Skep started to warm up to the opportunity and they were getting along good. The girl didn't mind my not keeping with her, as she knew that Fatu was my woman and that Fatu would be coming along later. I didn't leave her completely though, as I still got in a couple of dances with her, as well as with Diana and with the female volunteer, Leslie Miller. I kept telling Leslie that she had the responsibility of making sure that all of the other volunteers were satisfied, but she wasn't as good as she could have been at holding up her end. She did finally come around to asking some of them to dance, but only after my prompting her. Most of the people were content to just sit and drink, being real deadbeats, but I did my best to liven them up. I guess I am turning into quite the partier.

After awhile Fatu showed up, and she brought a friend. Later, Skep, that woman I brought, Fatu, and I all left and went to the Tropicana. After a beer there we went over to Omar Khayams and closed that place out. Then we went home, me with Fatu, and Skep with his woman. Therefore, my operation was a success, and Skep ended up having a good evening.

Today, though, I slept until 11:30, and then felt pretty much wasted for the rest of the day.
