We had a light breakfast of muffins and juice in camp.
Patti came to ride with us on into Sacramento. Many
people wanted coffee, so we headed out with a coffee shop
being our first destination. So we were about 5 miles
before we stopped again. No problem, though, as this
was to be our flattest day.
After coffee, Patti led us on an alternate route. I found
out that there is also a bike trail on the opposite side
of the American River, so we took it all of the way to
the fish hatchery, were the other trail crossed the river
to join us.
Cora and Jannene were ok with a stop for swimming in the river,
and Guy Neenan decided to join us. I forgot the spot where
we went in that other time. I was thinking that it was about
mile 7.0, but I think it was really at about mile 9.5, so we
passed it by without realizing it. Then when we got to mile 7.0
we looked around and found one spot, but it needed a hike
down a steep sandy embankment. Everyone was ok with this, so
down we went. We had a good time in the water. Guy faked us out,
saying that he had caught a fish, and then he held up a big trout
and shook it to make it seem that the fish was fighting to get free.
Guy then flung the fish over a fallen tree and it fell into the
water only a few inches from Cora and Jannene. It was only then that
we found out the fish was already dead. And smelled. We had a good
laugh.
Back on the road again, we decided to keep the Sacramento stop
short, and to just head on over to Davis for lunch. We did
manage to stop in Sacramento long enough to have smoothies, though.
Heading on into Davis, I tried out this alternate bike path, and
so we ended up coming into town by a different way. It took me a
few blocks to orient myself, but then I was able to find the
bike shop without too much trouble. And lunch was right next door.
Before lunch in Davis, Jannene was hoping to find a larger cluster
to put onto her flat-land bike. But, due to the Davis Double a few
weeks ago, the bike shops were all out of wall-climbing gears. So
instead, both Jannene and Cora invested in big jars of soothing butt
cream, which they shared with anyone in need.
Others from the tour were still at lunch. And while we were
having our lunch, some more of our group arrived, having just
completed the long option with a stop at the truck museum. After
lunch we went over to the park to play in the fountain, and I was
really dissapointed when I found that the fountain was turned off.
Bummer. Instead, we all just took a nap on the grass in the shade.
Rolling again, we went out of town on the nice shady bike trail,
and stopped off at the SAG stop. We met a few from the fast group,
and Peggy said that she was going to drop back and ride with us.
After a short stop at graffiti bridge, we got onto Putah Creek
Road and cruised the final miles on into camp at Lake Solano Park.
I rode in with Jannene, while Peggy and Cora drifted off the front.
It was again hot out, so it was good to finally get into camp. All
the shady spots were taken, but the sun was getting low now, so it
didn't really matter that we would be in the sunshine. We put up our
tents then went down to the creek and showers which were nearby.
Fran was standing in the ice cold water when I got there. I went
in to join her and swam around a bit. Very cold water here as it
comes from the bottom of Lake Berryessa. I just took a cold shower
afterwards, as the cold water still felt fine in the heat.
After showers, it was already time to walk across the road to dinner
in the group picnic area. Another great dinner. After dinner we all
walked across the bridge to the small store, then walked back to camp.
I finished the evening working a puzzle near the back of the truck.
Go to the next day.
